Many colleges ask that you write a personal statement to turn in as part of your application. This is a chance for you to give the admissions committee more background as to who you are. Oftentimes, they want you to tell a story about yourself that addresses one or more common themes in a well-written way:
•character-defining moment
•cultural awareness you’ve developed
•challenge faced
•personal hardship or barrier overcome
•goals, both personal and career
It is very important that you get started on your personal statement early. You will need to write multiple drafts and edit it many times. We recommend that you have a trusted, knowledgeable adult read and edit your personal statement many times before you turn it in. Make sure you give them at least a week to read and edit it!
